Progress slow on AkonCity, the Real life ‘Wakanda’ envisioned by Akon!

When the news broke, and the initial render images for Akoncity started pouring in a few years ago, people worldwide were amazed at the audacity of the project that Akon and his investors were embarking upon.

The city was going to cost $6 billion! Which is a hefty amount even for much more affluent countries, let alone a country where 40% of the population lives under the poverty line. But Akon sought to change this by building the most audacious city in Senegal and the whole of Africa.

At first glimpse, you can’t help but draw parallels with the fictional Marvel city of Wakanda, and you won't be wrong to do so. Akon has cited the aesthetic and feels that Wakanda gives to be a key player in shaping this large metropolis in Senegal.

The foundation stone was laid, and the people of Senegal were hoping for this future megacity to start its construction soon. Still, nothing happened. Akon has come out and assured people that the first phase might open up as soon as 2026. Still, few are buying the claim because of the silence they kept in the months following the laying of the foundation stone.

Also, some reports suggest that the $6 billion is not ever secured, the funding hasn’t been pouring into Africa lately, and the pandemic might be a reason.

Regardless, the project persists in people's minds and hearts, and Akon’s goodwill and striving to do something for him is commendable; we hope this project doesn’t get scrubbed altogether.
