WHO IS THE WEEKND

Recently, a rising star has been showing up in award shows with bandages all over his face in light of his new album, “After Hours”.

He’s not beaten up, but he sure just received a huge slap in the face not having been nominated for this year’s Grammy Awards. His name is Abel  Makkonen Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd. Abel was born in Toronto, Canada on the 16th of February in 1990. His father was absent for most of his life, or rather a “cameo” in that regard.

He started doing drugs in his teenage years and had to shoplift in order to support his use of drugs. Drake was present during his tour in Toronto, and there they discussed a possibility of working together. His first U.S. tour performance was at the Coachella Festival in 2012.

Later that same year, he signed a record deal with Republic Records. Abel released his first studio album on September 10, 2013.

It was positively received by the public and peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200, receiving gold certification from the RIAA. He has released four albums in total, all having charted well and gained multi-platinum status.

His best songs to date are: “The Hills”, with 11x platinum certification from the RIAA and #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100; and “Starboy” with 8x platinum certification from the RIAA and #1 on both the Cadian Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot 100.

He won two Grammy awards in 2015 and one in 2017, for the Best Urban Contemporary Album.
