Who is Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse was a huge influence to a number of today’s big artists like Adele, Lady Gaga, Florence Welch, Lana Del Rey and many more, no matter what genre of music they put out.She is now regarded by many as the queen of British soul, even after her passing due to alcohol poisoning.

Amy was born on 14 September, 1983 in Southgate of North London and was raised there, along with her older brother, Alex. She had uncles from her mother’s side of the family who were professional jazz musicians who, along with her paternal grandmother, had influenced her interest in jazz. Amy started writing music at fourteen, and later sang with the Bolsha Band.

She was later signed to Island Records while still on a contract with EMI. “Frank”, her debut studio album, was released on in October 2003 and ranked 3rd on the UK Albums, #1 on the UK Jazz & Blues Albums (OCC), and #33 on the Billboard 200. Her next album, “Back to Black”, was heavily inspired by 50’s girl groups. After its release, “Back to Black” became #1 on the UK Albums (OCC) and #7 on the Billboard 200. Amy has won 24 awards throughout her career, including six Grammy awards; a BRIT award for Best Foreign Female Act; and an MTV Europe Music award for Artist’s Choice.

A posthumous album was released in December 2011 titled, “Lioness: Hidden Treasures”. Her parents set up the Amy Winehouse Foundation in memory of Amy, to provide frontline support to those who are struggling with substance abuse.
