WHO ARE THE FUGEES

Fugees are one of the most influential Hip Hop groups of the 90’s with their music infusing Hip Hop with soul and reggae.

The group initially started out with highschool friends Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel, and Marcy Harriell who would become a Broadway star in her own right, creating the trio ‘Tyme’.

Marcy would later leave and Pras’s cousin, Wyclef Jean, would join the group and adopt the moniker ‘Tranzlator Crew’. Releasing demos and performing numerous gigs got them a record deal with Ruffhouse.

After signing, the trio would change their name to Fugees, taken from the word ‘refugees’ which was used as a derogatory term for Haitian-Americans.

In 1994 the trio released their first album “Blunted Reality” to limited success only reaching 62nd on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album Chart.

Two years later they released their Grammy winning, 6x platinum album ‘The Score’ which hosted the infamous hit songs ‘No Woman, No Cry’, ‘Ready or Not’ and the Grammy Award winning ‘Killing Me Softly’.

In 1997 the trio went their separate ways with Jean and Hill each having a tremendously solo music career and Pras focusing on movie soundtracks and acting.

Despite their short-lived time as a group, their infamy lives on.
