WHO IS BRANDY

She’s an it-girl in the 90’s to R&B fans, was Kobe Bryant’s prom date in ‘96, and she makes for a better TV star than the Kardashians altogether. Her role in Thea got her a Young Artists Award nomination for Outstanding Youth Ensemble, and her performance in another sitcom, Moesha, won her the NAACP Image Award for outstanding Youth Actor/Actress.

She was born Brandy Rayana Norwood on February 11 in 1979, in Mississippi. Music has always been a huge part of her life, since her father was a choir director and a gospel singer.

She started participating in talent shows at 11, and her hard work eventually paid off as she was signed into Atlantic Records in 1993. She released her debut album a year later, which was self-titled, and it peaked at #20 on the Billboard 200. It hosted “I Wanna Be Down”; “Brokenhearted”; and “Baby”, which made top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

During the span of her music career, she had also been appearing on film and television. She was cast in America’s Got Talent as one of the judges and was present for only the first season of the show for urgent reasons.

Although she’s slowed down in recording songs, she has released a new album after eight years in 2020.

Brandy has won all seven Billboard Music Awards nominations she’s received, as well as four BMI Awards, an ECHO award and a Grammy… that is, among other things.
