HOW IS TYLER THE CREATOR
Tyler Gregory Okonma was born on March 6th, 1991 in Ladera Heights, California. Having never met his father, Tyler was solely raised by his mother and from an early age was extremely ‘creative’ designing his own album covers and teaching himself to play the piano.
Okonma rose to fame when he co-founded Hip Hop collective Odd Future, a year after the release of the groups debut mixtape Tyler released his own mixtape ‘Bastard’.
The mixtape gained a lot of interest from within the industry which led him to release his first studio album ‘Goblin’, debuting at number 5 on Billboard’s 200 with the lead single ‘Yonkers’ receiving critical acclaim. His early music caused a lot of controversy due to the outlandish disses and horrorcore sound, a label he would strongly refute.
Receiving criticism due to the use of misogynistic and homophobic slurs, depsite continued support for fellow Odd Future member Frank Ocean’s coming out and rumours around his own sexuality.
Tyler’s music has changed drastically now siding with a soft melodic sound incorporating jazz into his production. His fourth and fifth releases, ‘Flower Boy’ and ‘Igor’ have been met with worldwide critical acclaim with the later reaching number one on the charts and receiving a Grammy Award for best rap album.
