WHO IS ASHANTI
The R&B scene is filled with diverse, unique voices. Ashanti was the sweet, breathy voice in the scene. Her first break out was in “What’s Luv?” with Fat Joe, and “Always on Time” with Ja Rule.
Her career as a singer after the collaborations would leave our eardrums melting in a good way. Ashanti Douglas was born on October 13, 1980 in New York. She was found by Irv Gotti, who is apparently the world’s greatest talent seeker.
Subsequently, Ashanti was signed to Murder Inc., where she would release first single, “Foolish”. “Foolish” has become her best performing single till now, peaking at #1 on three Billboard charts including the Billboard Hot 100, and #2 on the Mainstream 40 chart.
Soon after the single’s release, her self-titled album came out and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.
“Ashanti” won a Grammy award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. “Chapter II”, her second album, was released in 2003. It also debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200! She had released five total albums to date, the last one having come out in 2014.
However, she’s still active in the music industry, collaborating with artists such as Ty Dolla Sign and Lil Wayne.
Ashanti, a textbook Libra, has repeatedly admitted to being the worst at decision making… BUT, she has a heart of gold.
She had partnered up with the Family Violence Prevention Fund in raising awareness on domestic violence, as well as actively participating in Make-A-Wish Foundation activities.
